What Causes a “Double Chin”? What Is Submental Fat?

Sometimes, no matter how much you diet or exercise, submental fullness may seem impossible to get rid of. It can make you look older or heavier than you actually are, and this can negatively impact your self-esteem and confidence. However, you’re not alone — 67% of people said they’re bothered by their submental fat or the appearance of fullness around their chin.

Submental fat, also known as “submental fullness,” is a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition that can impact a broad range of adults, including both women and men. Commonly referred to as “double chin,” this term simply refers to any quantity of excess or unwanted fat underneath the chin. The appearance of a double chin may be caused by or develop from a wide range of personal factors, including:

How KYBELLA® Can Help

Patients who have melasma or are overly tan are not viable candidates for treatment as light rays attract pigment, making dark skin and patches of melasma darken further. Additionally, patients who smoke are not typically recommended for IPL photofacials; smoking counteracts the benefits of treatment due to carcinogen exposure, which results in prematurely-aged skin.

Patients with skin types that range from the light brown of IV to the darkest hues of VI are generally not optimal candidates for a photofacial. Patients with lighter skin tones (but not pale complexions) who fall between Fitzpatrick types III and IV may see effective results from IPL treatment, but these candidates tend to require more sessions to receive this outcome. Successful IPL recipients are most often categorized in the I and II scales of the Fitzpatrick system. The Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale is below.

Does KYBELLA® Have Any Side Effects?

Side effects from KYBELLA are minimal but may be experienced by some individuals. The most common side effects from KYBELLA include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and temporary firmness of the treatment area.

These physical reactions are minor, are not a cause for serious concern, and their appearance should not cause you any significant or lasting discomfort.

Because submental fullness is so common, many people can benefit from KYBELLA®. The double chin reduction treatment has undergone more than 20 clinical trials and received FDA approval, and there are very few requirements to be considered an ideal candidate for the procedure.

What to Expect From KYBELLA® Treatment at Our Med Spa

KYBELLA® is typically given during a brief, in-office treatment session lasting approximately 15 to 20 minutes. When you receive this procedure at Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center, each session will be administered by a certified med spa practitioner.

Before the procedure, your med spa practitioner will brief you on everything you need to know about KYBELLA®, as well as answer any questions or concerns you may have. This can also be addressed once again after your treatment session has ended, should you have any remaining items to discuss.

During the KYBELLA® procedure, your aesthetician will give you a short series of injections into the target area of fat under your chin. Prior to the first injection, your practitioner may apply an ice pack, cold compress, and/or administer an injectable local anesthesia to the treatment area. This is optional and intended only to make you more comfortable.

To reduce redness and inflammation following the procedure, your med spa provider may also suggest that you take an over-the-counter pain reliever or NSAID, such as ibuprofen, before your appointment.

You and your practitioner will work together to customize your KYBELLA® treatment to ensure that it ultimately satisfies you and accomplishes all of your aesthetic goals.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of sessions needed will vary from person to person, as the quantity and frequency of KYBELLA® injections are determined by each individual’s unique amount of submental fullness.

However, many patients see desired results in as few as two to four treatments. Some people require up to six treatments in order to achieve visible contouring of the chin profile.

Once your chin profile has improved to satisfactory levels, it’s unlikely that you’ll need to be treated with KYBELLA® again. You and your practitioner will work together to customize your KYBELLA® treatment to ensure that it satisfies your wishes and accomplishes all of your aesthetic goals.

Is There Any Downtime?

For most patients, downtime following a KYBELLA® session is minimal or not required at all. In patients who did require a short recovery period, this downtime occurred most commonly after the first treatment session. When scheduling your treatments at our med spa, we recommend that you plan ahead to ensure that there are no conflicts with your social plans, work hours, or other commitments.
