About Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photo-Facials

Ideal Candidates
Anyone with sun damage, uneven skin tone, dull skin, Rosacea, or broken capillaries.
How it Works
Diminish the signs of aging, by removing pigmented lesions, sun-spots, age-spots, and broken capillaries with the fast and safe IPL photo-rejuvenation treatments. Palomar® Intense pulsed light treatments use the MaxG hand-piece to deliver energy to target and destroy vascular and pigmented lesions associated withveins, Rosacea, sun damage, and age spots from face, chest, hands, legs, and arms. During the procedure, the entire treatment area is scanned with an IPL handpiece and treated with multiple passes and customized settings.
Typical Results
A noticeable change occurs within 1 treatment, however a series of 3-5 is normally necessary for the best results. The formation of new collagen results in an increase in the elasticity and overall appearance of your skin. Pigmented lesions come to the surface and slough off. Red and blue vessels typically disappear. Sun damage is repaired. The skin simply looks younger, feels tighter and pores appear smaller.
The Technology
The Palomar MaxG offers superior closure of the larger, deeper facial vessels with Palomar's unique combination of Dynamic Spectrum ShiftingSM and dual-band filters – which provides more uniform heating across the entire diameter of larger vessels.

At Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center, giving our patients youthfully beautiful and clear skin is our specialty. If the effects of aging and sun exposure have been unkind to your skin, schedule a consultation with one of our expert aestheticians to learn about IPL photofacials. By using precise and concentrated pulses of focused light, photofacial treatments can successfully repair years of aging and sun damage.

How do IPL Photofacials Work?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacials uses concentrated light energy to break down and pull unwanted pigment to the surface of the skin. Years of constant sun exposure accelerate melanin production and cause our skin to age more quickly, creating freckles, sun spots and patches of darkened skin. The gradual weakening of collagen and elastin fibers over time also contributes to skin that appears prematurely aged and weathered. IPL photofacials work to counteract these effects through a series of rejuvenating treatments. During an IPL photofacial, precise pulses of light are delivered to the surface of the skin and beneath the epidermis to target superficial both blemishes and deeper pigmentation issues. The focused light energy breaks down patches of pigment and undoes years of sun damage with each treatment. Photofacials also activate the body’s natural wound response, stimulating increased collagen and elastin production that benefits your skin for several months following your final treatment.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for a Photofacial?

IPL photofacials are incredibly versatile and can be performed not only on the face but also the hands, legs, arms, chest and back. Patients with skin concerns in any of those locations can benefit from a photofacial, although the treatment does have some skin type limitations. Patients with darker skin that is above a four on the Fitzpatrick scale are generally not good candidates for a photofacial. Patients with a skin tone of three or four on the Fitzpatrick scale may receive treatment, although they tend to require more treatment sessions than the average patient. Those with lighter skin tones make ideal candidates for IPL photofacials. Photofacials can target a wide variety of skin blemishes and aesthetic concerns, including:
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun spots and signs of sun damage
  • Acne scars
  • Rosacea
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Dull skin tone
  • Enlarged pores
  • Broken capillaries and vascular lesions
  • Hyperpigmentation and freckles
Patients with any of the above skin-related concerns can experience excellent results from a photofacial treatment. Patients who have melasma or who are overly tan are not viable candidates for treatment as light rays are attracted to pigment, making dark skin and patches of melasma darken further. Additionally, patients who smoke are not typically recommended for IPL photofacials as smoking counteracts the benefits of treatment and prematurely ages skin. All patients interested in photorejuvenation should have realistic expectations about their results prior to the start of their treatment. At Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center, our experienced skincare experts can help you identify exactly what type of treatment your skin needs following an in-person consultation. If you are interested in IPL photofacials to rejuvenate and restore your youthful, schedule a consultation with us to learn more.

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

At the start of your treatment, your Winter Park Laser skincare expert will first cleanse your skin to remove any makeup and surface grime. They will then apply a cool gel to the surface of your skin that improves the effects of the targeted light waves used during treatment. Numbing cream is not typically used before a photofacial as most patients find it unnecessary, although we will happily provide it upon request. Once you are ready to begin your treatment, your care provider will move the IPL handpiece across the surface of your skin in a grid-like pattern, pausing in certain spots to deliver maximum treatment to the areas that need it most. At Winter Park Laser, we use the industry-leading Cynosure® Icon™ aesthetic system with the MaxG™ Optimized Light™ handpiece for superior results that reach deeper within the skin’s layers. Treatments typically last about 30 to 60 minutes, with a standard full-face treatment taking around 45 minutes. Longer appointments may be necessary if you choose to target multiple areas during the same treatment. Most patients find IPL photofacials to be a relatively comfortable experience and report feeling only a slight stinging sensation or mild warmness from the focused pulses of light energy. After completing your treatment, your aesthetician will remove the cooling gel and clean your skin.

What Can I Expect After My Treatment?

IPL photofacials require absolutely no downtime, although you will need to take certain precautions to ensure your skin stays safe and healthy. Make sure you avoid direct sun exposure for one full week following treatment. Your skin will be weakened and more susceptible to the harmful effects of sun damage. Wear sunscreen at all times to ensure your skin stays protected throughout the day. After your appointment, you are free to resume your normal activities and return to work if you wish. Your skill will look a bit red and puffy but should quickly return to its normal tone and texture throughout the day. You may apply makeup immediately after your appointment. While you will experience noticeable results with just a single photofacial, most patients need an average of three to five treatments for optimal results. Each treatment session can be scheduled every three to four weeks, giving you youthfully beautiful skin in just a few months. Your results will continue to improve long after your final appointment, as the increased collagen and elastin production remodels your skin’s texture, elasticity and appearance. Your final results can be enjoyed for about 12 months, after which maintenance appointments will be necessary to counteract the continued effects of aging and exposure.
