dermal fillers orlando

Dermal fillers have become the go-to anti-aging choice for many of our patients today, due to their quick results and their ability to treat a wide range of aging symptoms. The biggest drawback to these injectable treatments is their temporary nature. Is there a way to make your fillers last longer? While the duration of a filler is based on many different factors, there are some positive steps you can take to possibly prolong your results – even for a short period of time.

How long will my filler last?

At Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center, we offer the full line of Juvederm filler products. Some of these fillers tend to last longer than others. Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus are approved by the FDA to last for one full year. Juvederm Voluma is approved to last up to two years. While this is a good general rule of thumb, the actual duration can vary somewhat based on a number of different factors.

Fillers with a thicker formulation typically last a bit longer than formulations with smaller particles. Thicker formulas tend to be used on deeper facial creases or to restore volume to areas like the cheeks or jawline. Smoother formulations containing smaller particles are usually preferred for more delicate areas like the lips and under the eyes, or to smooth away fine lines.

Factors that Affect Your Results

There are a number of factors that could impact how long a filler lasts:

  • The amount of filler injected
  • The location of the injection
  • The number of injections used
  • The speed of resorption

Different treatment areas tend to respond differently to filler formulations. Areas that have a significant amount of movement, such as around the mouth area, often feature shorter results than areas of the face that tend to be more static. The muscle movement in the area can affect how fast the filler formula is reabsorbed by the body.

Patients reabsorb the fillers at different rates as well, although the reason for the difference isn’t completely known. Some patients just metabolize the fillers at a faster pace, so the results don’t last as long. If you are one of these patients, you can try different formulations to see if some might last longer than others.

Keeping it Going

While there is no definitive way to extend the results of your filler, there are some simple steps you can take that might help your new look last a bit longer. Some of those steps, which are generally followed in the days and weeks directly following treatment, might include:

  • Avoid extreme heat or sun exposure on the skin
  • Drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated
  • Avoid manipulation of the treatment area that cause the filler to spread
  • Sleep with your head elevated to reduce blood flow to treatment areas
  • Avoid strenuous exercise that could increase blood flow to treatment areas
  • Ask your doctor to inject more filler if it will not negatively affect results
  • Have a touch-up treatment a few weeks later to boost the filler’s staying power
